To address the NTLM password problem - when your password expires or the authenitcation with the stored password fails for some reason, the dialog automatically pops up again. But, say you have clicked "remember password" for one pair of username & pwd and you would like to log in using a different pair? In this case you need to make IE 'forget' the existing stored uname & pwd pair, even though its valid.
To do this:
Goto Tools->Internet Options->Security->custom Level->(scroll all the way down to the User Authentication section)->select the "Prompt for user name and password" radio button. Now that domain logon dialog will popup again. So you have a chance to type in a different username & password.
Note that this doesnt really clear the password. (the old username & password pair is still stored. you can verify this by changing back to "Automatic logon only in Intranet Zone" & you will run into the same problems again)
Also, its a bit annoying having to type in unames & passwords within the Intranet Zone. How to revert back to "Automatic logon only in Intranet Zone" AND make IE forget the stored password?
This is a little tricky:
1. Change user authentication setting to "Prompt for user name and password" (see above)
2. Use the old username (the one for which the password has been stored, & you want to clear) and an INCORRECT password (any icorrect password will do) and CLICK "remember password". Yes, you want IE to remember a bogus password so that it will fail.
3. Click ok. The login will fail of course. But the job is done already. Now an incorrect password is stored along with that username, and so even when you revert back to "Automatic logon only in Intranet Zone", IE will not be able to login with the old username and password. This means the logon dialog will popup again.
4. Remember to NEVER click that "remember password" checkbox again.
